Game of Thrones: Season 7 Episode 1 – Instant Reaction

Winter has come. Season 7 has arrived. Joe, Steve, Beef, and special guest John discuss the premiere and their rapid-reaction to an episode that underwhelmed a bit but delivered a lot of information. The foursome agreed that the opening may have been one of the best scenes in the entire show and that there is a lot going on at the Citadel that hadn’t been discussed previously but this episode was ultimately about two women, one standing on a map, the other taking her first look at one that are on a collision course. The boys also discuss the odds of who will be the next character to be “retired” and odds of who ultimately ends up on the throne at the end of the season! Pro Football Talk – Click bait professionals.

For years now I’ve had to read articles published by PFT regarding the Washington Redskins, or the Washington Football team since they, like ESPN, tend to recycle outdated political fluff pieces. Personally, when I visit a sports website, I like to read about my team, the moves made and the issues they will face the upcoming game, week or season. Everyone is entitled to their own views and beliefs, but once those views play a role in true reporting, you’ve lost me as a visitor.

If you’re not aware, PFT’s preseason power rankings have the Washington Redskins at number 25. Hate much? Biased because of the name? According to PFT the Redskins have the 7th worst roster in the NFL. Yes, we lost two 1,000 yard receivers. Both of whom were short and did not help in the red zone. Since then we’ve replaced them with the “Washington Monuments” aka, a bunch of 6-foot-somethings to help Kirk move the ball and scores TDs. Next you factor in a revamped defense, stud free agent additions, a solid draft that addressed many needs on defense and a RB that can bench a school bus.

It’s incredible that a team who was a game away from missing the playoffs with essentially everyone returning except Jackson and Garçon can be ranked so low. I haven’t even mentioned the Hogs 2.0. Somehow the Redskins went from having crossing guards as offensive lineman to maybe the second best o-line in the league. Top 5 easy.

I am not going to say we are a great team. There is plenty to prove, the Kirk contract issue is still on everyone’s mind and the NFC east got a lot more difficult this past offseason. However, the truth remains, regardless of the contract situation, we will have a top tier QB behind center. Just because our front office can’t sign our QB to a long term deal and the media thinks we are dysfunctional, does not mean the roster isn’t talented. You can’t possibly think that the Redskins are worse than the Buffalo Bills, who just lost a pro bowl MLB…to THE REDSKINS.

25 is low. Very low. A potent offense, a coach with a fire under him, (not to be mistaken with a hot-seat) and additions to a defense that already had some nice pieces in place do not make a 25th ranked team. Knowing how PFT operates, I’m sure the Cowboys will be a top-10 team. A team that has a 2nd year QB, whom we at DTC predict will take a HUGE step backwards, a RB that will probably miss the first 4 games, and a defense that has Jeff Heath starting at safety.

When all is said and done the question here is not if the team has talent. The offseason moves show this team has improved from top to bottom. Jackson/Garçon are 30 years old. One was injury prone, the other lost a step. TP/Doctson could easily be bright spots this upcoming year. The only “concern” would be the motivation. Watching a team play hardball with a possible franchise QB who has done nothing but prove himself is not something to motivate. Maybe a slap in the face ranking by a garbage website that has its own political agenda will motivate the guys a little bit.

Pinstripe Profanities and Money Mayweather… The Fight

Well, the fight that nobody expected to actual take place is on the books and just about one month away. LP, FP, and Stevie have the night off so Joe invited Boxing and MMA super-fan “20” on the show to discuss the fight, the hype surrounding it, and to talk tactics and predictions as well. If you love combat sports or just want to get caught up on all things Mayweather vs. McGregor this is the podcast you need to listen to. Don’t miss Joe’s hot take (@26min) regarding a few changes that could be made to this fight that would command an increase of the PayPerView buy from $100 to $250… could the two sports be combined into a super-combat-sport? Tune in and listen to the guys discuss! This fight is going to happen… who you got!? (photo credit: SkySports)

Triple R: Quarterbacks

Triple R: Quarterbacks

The Redskins are engaged in a game of high-stakes chicken with their franchise QB Kirk Cousins and LP and Joe are terrified to ask what the future holds for the franchise. The show was supposed to be about the OL/DL but quickly got sideways and into the Cousins contract status, why management is unlikely to get a deal done, and a discussion of the backup options Bruce Allen may be preparing to explore. Once upon a time LP was 99% sure the Skins would get a long term deal done with Kirk… he has updated his opinion while Joe has double-down on his. What is the magic number to get this deal done? What happens if it doesn’t get done? Do Redskins fans support the team or the quarterback? … is it really long term deal or bust?!

So….Do the Caps still have a shot?

The last time we covered the caps on DTC, we discussed their Off season moves, the draft and what pieces are still missing. A few more moves happened, yet the question remains….”So will we have another shot?” Being that this is a DC sports team, most fans fell into two categories after the Caps yet again shot blanks (pun intended) in the playoffs. Either you gave up all hope, said we need to blow up the entire team, Ovi is old and fire Trotz, or you were a hopeless fan who believed we’d figure it out and make the right moves this offseason.

As discussed previously, the Capitals resigned Oshie to  monster 8yr/46mil deal. At first everyone was thrilled we retained the contributing and big time right winger. That was until everyone remembered he’s 30. Next the Caps resigned Orlov, younger and a defensemen we need, but essentially caused us to lose Shattenkirk. To the Rangers. 1 of the 3 heads in the Capitals playoffs nightmare.

How’s everyone feeling so far? The loyalists still loyal? The deflated still flat? Lets keep going shall we? With Shattenkirk gone, his blue line partner Alzner is also gone. Who went to Montreal (that would be head number 2 for those keeping track). Sadly, the worst news still hasn’t been mentioned. Trading away Johansson for draft picks. I understand the move, and MacLellan was justified in doing so in order to retain a high ceiling player in Center Kuznetsov.  Until you realize that he kept 36 year old Orpik, with a pretty big cap hit on the team. What was his reason? Orpik’s off-ice value. MacLellan and Bruce Allen probably talk about winning off the field/ice over drinks on the regular.

So do we still have a shot? Can the Capitals find a way to make it back into the playoffs? As a recap we are left with, over paid vets, an abundance of young talent and giving opposing teams some pretty serious weapons. The nucleus is still there. The off-ice veterans are there to help the young talent, and I believe in Trotz to make us competitive. Sadly though nobody will know if we suck or not until we make it to the playoffs.
